On April 29, Johnson Creek came to Rio to play a doubleheader. The Vikings played right with the defending state champions until the third inning when errors turned into runs for Johnson Creek. They ended up losing 9-3.

The second game was packed with scoring: Rio had six runs in the first inning, Johnson Creek scored eight in the second, Rio had three runs in the second inning and Johnson Creek finished the game with seven runs in the fourth. The Blue Jays swept the series with a convincing 20-9 victory.

Baseball The next two games were both losses on the road, one to Deerfield and the other to Husty/Dodgeland. Highlights from the Deerfield game were freshman Ty Kearney’s homerun and Rio’s ability to score runs. Rio had a good chance to come away with a victory against Husty/Dodgeland until the fifth inning where they score ten runs to go ahead 11-4. Both teams had eight hits and four errors but the Vikings somehow lost 13-5.

Yet again, Rio had one bad inning against Williams Bay and it cost them a win. Going into the seventh inning the Vikings had a 14-7 lead. Williams Bay went to score nine runs to go ahead by two. Rio rallied to score one run but could no tie it.

Brendan O’Malley pitched well in his first career start but the lack of hits lost the game for the Vikings. Pardeeville defeated Rio 9-1.

Although the baseball team has not met their expectations, they still have a good chance to win their regional. You may think that I am crazy seeing that they have not won a game yet, but nobody in the regional has a winning record. Fall River and Cambria-Friesland have a combined record of 4-21, while Randolph has a modest 6-8 record. Maranatha Baptist is also having a losing season. If the Vikings’ bats start hitting at the right time they could find themselves being regional champions.
