Every two years we have an opportunity to do something most of the world can only dream about. We can elect new leaders to serve in our state assembly. If we do so wisely, we can help chart a new and better direction for our state. The fat cats and professional politicians have been charting our course for too long now. Too many big corporations throw off their tax burden – and the rest of us are left holding the bag. And yet, these very same corporations depend on the educational system they refuse to fund. They depend on the roads whose maintenance they shirk. The rich get richer, and the rest of us keep running harder just to stay in the same place. This year, we have the opportunity to send a citizen-legislator of the highest caliber to Madison to represent the 47th Assembly District: Trish O’Neil. Trish is not a professional politician. She is one of us. She is the real deal. As a former co-owner and administrator of a private Family Practice Clinic, Trish, a registered nurse, understands the problems faced by small business and the health care crisis in our state. As a former President of the Columbus School Board, she understands the challenges facing our schools and has shown a willingness to roll up her sleeves and work to improve them. But more importantly, Trish is offering herself for public office for the right reason: to serve. She cares. She listens. And she will work like the dickens to do the right thing should we choose her to represent us in our legislature. Obviously, I strongly feel that we need more like Trish in our halls of our government, and would ask that you consider supporting her candidacy. For more information, you can visit her website at http://trishforassembly.org/ . But even more important than who you decide to support is your engagement in the political process. We live in country so used to democracy that we have begun to take it for granted. A democracy depends upon the informed participation of citizens. I urge everyone to find out what they can about those seeking to represent them. Trish will be holding a number of public forums in the months to come, as I’m sure the other candidates will. Go check them out and decide for yourself. And be sure to vote in the primary election on September 9 and the general election on November 4.
